Resume Building Service

It is common knowledge that one of the major aspects to securing a role is your Resume or CV. Important as this document is, it is worth remembering that its sole purpose it to secure an interview. With that goal in mind, what should a CV contain and how should it be set out? At JP Smith Recruitment and HR, we see hundreds of resumes every day. Some are fit for purpose and some are not. How do you create a CV that will help you secure an interview? Follow these three simple steps and you will be well on your way.

1. Make It Concise

As a general rule, the most effective CVs are no longer than three pages. Remember that the sole purpose of the CV is to secure an interview, not to give a detailed explanation of every role you have ever held. It is also acceptable to leave out positions that you held more than 15 years ago, particularly if they are not relevant to your current career.

2. Make It Relevant

Your CV needs to be relevant to the position that you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for an accounts position, focus on the accounts functions you have had in your previous roles. The easier it is for the hirer to see how your skills relate to the role, the more likely you are to make it onto the shortlist.

3. Make It Easy to Read

Although “fancy” graphics and complex formatting may look good on your computer, it may be different to what the hiring party sees when they open it through their computer system. A simple, well laid out resume will be just as effective, provided that you have followed the two steps above. Don’t forget to proof read it for any mistakes!

Creating an effective CV can be a difficult task, however by following these fundamental steps you will ensure that your CV is fit for purpose and hopefully, improve your chances of securing an interview.
