Looking Beyond the Resume: Finding the Right Fit for Your Organisation

Recruiting a new person can take a lot of time, but getting the right person for your organisation is important. It’s more than just looking at a resume and conducting an interview. A good recruitment process should look at whether the candidate has the right skills, experience and values to fit the organisation.

Once a resume is received, the candidate should be assessed against the position description. From there, interviews, consultant notes and reference checks can all help provide a better understanding of the candidate. Reference checks, in particular, can provide valuable insight into a candidate’s skills, experience, work style and suitability for the role. However, asking follow-up questions is just as important as asking the initial questions. Digging a little deeper and asking for specific examples can help confirm what has been discussed throughout the recruitment process and provide a clearer picture of the candidate.

At the end of the day, taking a little extra time to ask the right questions can make a big difference when it comes to finding the right person for your organisation. Looking beyond the resume and digging a little deeper during reference checks can give you valuable insights and greater confidence in your decision. After all, the goal isn’t just to fill a position — it’s to find someone who is the right fit for the role, the team and the organisation.
