EXIT INTERVIEWS

MAKE SURE HISTORY DOESN'T REPEAT ITSELF AGAIN AND AGAIN

An often undervalued tool is the Exit Interview. We understand that when an employee moves on, oftentimes this can be a busy period for you and you’re left with not having the time to ask questions and grasp a better understanding of their decision. Many businesses underestimate the value to be gained from asking the right questions as your employee prepares to move on.

Essential qualities of an Exit Interview include:

  1. Employee comfort– departing employees must feel safe about being honest with their answers. They generally do not want to burn their bridges with the employer. Using an external exit interview service is the most effective way to assure employees that their honesty will be valued.
  2. Precision– both qualitative and quantitative data should be collected, but the emphasis should be on the latter. Without this, exit data becomes subject to interpretation of specific wording and is difficult to precisely analyse.
  3. Sensitivity– Exit Interviews are frequently a process of discovery for departing employees in terms of the drivers of their decision to leave. A suitably skilled interviewer will help them identify the root causes through discussion in a sensitive manner.
  4. Participation– It has been found that surveys are very easy for an employee to ignore during a busy last week at the office. A compulsory Exit Interview has shown to increase participation from around 20% to 90%. It is vital to ensure that Exit Interviews are compulsory as this will provide a sample of true employee feedback allowing for an accurate reflection on the workplace.
